The Distinguished Service Medal (NRANZ-DSM) was adopted by Council September 2010. Individual members and associates of the NRA NZ, past or present, who have contributed significantly to the Association are eligible to receive this recognition.

Life Member Oamaru Rifle
Ernie joined the Oamaru Rifle Club in 1946 and continued shooting until 2005. He continues to maintain an interest in the club and in rifle shooting in Otago, often being present to award the trophies at the annual Otago Championships.
He attended his first club AGM in 1949, was elected a committee member in 1951 and was club handicapper from 1954 to 1968. He was Deputy Club President from 1953 to 1968 and had two terms as President from 1968 to 1973 and then again from 1982 to 2008.
The Oamaru club has had to build two ranges during Ernie’s time as a member and he was instrumental in getting materials and equipment donated, or at very low cost. The current range has 7 targets with mounds from 100 to 600 yards and was built at a cost of $1356 in 1989.
During his time as a member Ernie has acted as club gunsmith, coach and mentor and has helped fellow club members in whatever manner was required.
At a national level Ernie has also been very active. He was Otago Delegate to the NRA Council from 1969 to 1990.
He attended the National Rifle championships for many years achieving a forth placing in 1977 winning B Grade in 1966 and 1977 and winning many Queens Badges.
Ernie has travelled extensively throughout the South Island to attend shoots and is well known and respected by all those that know him for his shooting skills and sense of humour.
Council recognises Ernie’s contribution to the sport for over 50 years. The NRANZ Distinguished Service Medal to Ernie was approved by Council in March 2011.
